What Are Gel Nails?

Gel nails refer to any nail enhancement that uses a gel product cured under LED or UV light. There are three main types: gel polish (a thin color coating on natural nails), Gel-X extensions (pre-shaped soft gel tips for added length), and Builder Gel (a thick gel sculpted onto the natural nail as an overlay or extension).

All gel types share key characteristics: they are flexible, odorless during application, and cure (harden) under LED light in seconds. Gel nails look more natural than acrylic because the gel material is slightly translucent, mimicking the look of a real nail. Gel is also gentler on natural nails because it does not require filing into the nail plate.

What Are Acrylic Nails?

Acrylic nails are created by mixing a liquid monomer and powder polymer at the nail station. The mixture hardens at room temperature within minutes and is sculpted freehand onto your natural nail or a form to add length and strength. Acrylic is the hardest, most rigid nail enhancement available.

Acrylic has been the gold standard of nail enhancements for decades. It is extremely durable, holds bold shapes (coffin, stiletto, almond) well, and is the most affordable extension option. The main drawbacks are the strong monomer odor during application and the more intensive surface prep required (filing the natural nail for adhesion).

Price Comparison

Acrylic is slightly cheaper than gel extensions. An acrylic full set starts at $50, while a Gel-X full set starts at $60 — a $10 difference. Acrylic fills are $40 and are needed every 2–3 weeks. Gel-X is typically replaced as a full set every 3–5 weeks. Builder Gel fills are $50.

Over a year, the total cost is comparable. Acrylic requires more frequent fills (every 2–3 weeks) but at a lower cost per fill. Gel-X requires less frequent replacement (every 3–5 weeks) but at a slightly higher cost per set. For budget-conscious clients, acrylic is the most affordable option per visit.

Durability and Strength

Acrylic is the harder, more rigid material. It resists impact, holds bold shapes without bending, and is the best choice for clients who are hard on their hands — nail biters, manual workers, or anyone who wants maximum durability. Acrylic nails do not flex, which means they can crack under heavy impact rather than bend.

Gel is more flexible. It bends slightly with pressure, which makes it more comfortable and natural-feeling but slightly less impact-resistant. Gel-X extensions are durable for daily wear but may not hold up as well as acrylic for very aggressive use. Builder Gel falls between the two — more durable than gel polish but less rigid than acrylic.

Damage and Nail Health

Neither gel nor acrylic causes damage when applied and removed properly by a licensed technician. The key difference is in the prep and removal:

• Gel: No filing into the nail plate. The gel bonds on top of the natural nail. Removal is by soak-off in 15–20 minutes.
• Acrylic: Requires light filing of the natural nail surface for adhesion. Removal is by soak-off or file-down, which takes longer.

Odor and Comfort

Gel is completely odorless — the gel product and adhesive have no smell. Acrylic has a noticeable monomer odor during application that some clients find strong. The smell dissipates after the acrylic hardens, but it is present throughout the application process.

If you are sensitive to smells, pregnant, or simply prefer a calmer salon experience, gel is the better choice. Both methods are fully cured or hardened within the appointment time — no drying time needed after you leave.
